The B+W guide to using filters:
Overall, filters make it possible to achieve images that simply could not be made without them – even in the age of digital capture and manipulation.
Effects such as those created with a circular polarizing filter are difficult and time consuming to replicate using software - and the best results are still achieved in camera.
Here are the B+W tips as to how and why to use filters:
- Some effects simply can’t be created as well using software – for example the effect of a quality circular polarising filter
- Always use quality filters – there’s no point spending a lot of money on an expensive lens, to then put a cheap piece of glass on it. Invest in the best quality filters available – whether its simply a clear glass or UV filter for protection, or a filter which will achieve certain effects
- Always protect your lenses – lenses are expensive - and by using just a clear glass filter or UV you can protect your precious glass
- Always choose a filter which uses a brass mount – this ensures the glass is held securely in place and means filters wont get stuck or bind on your lens, or to other filters
- Check out filter coatings – multi resistant and anti flare coatings make a real difference (multi resistant coatings will protect the filter from dirt, scratches and moisture, but above all the unique dirt and water-repellent surface makes cleaning the filters easier too
- B+W coatings actually form a harder surface coating than glass itself!
- B+W filters are coated on both sides – not just one side like cheaper alternatives
